All examination methods and operations are performed in accordance to current standards and norms.

Material Examinations

  • Sampling and sectioning of parts to be examined
  • Preparation of metallographic specimens and mounts, macro- and micro-slides:
    cold or warm embedding, etching of micrographs
  • Coating thickness measurement: calo test or light microscopic examination of sectioned and embedded samples
  • Coating adhesion testing: via Rockwell C indentation test
  • Coating hardness testing: instrumented identation hardness test
  • Chemical composition analysis: determination of material grade (via arc spectrometry, GDOES or EDX microanalysis)

Materials Analysis and Failure Analysis

  • Light microscopic investigations: microstructure evaluation, determination of grain size, degree of purity and carbide bands / network, ...
  • Chemical composition analysis for probably mixed-up materials
  • EDX microanalysis for small metallic samples (e.g. foreign particles, chips, etc.)
  • Depth profile analysis, near surface carbon and nitrogen measurements
  • Chemical composition analysis of coatings
  • Hardness testing in accordance to Rockwell, Brinell and Vickers (micro and macro hardness)
  • Mobile harndness testing, instrumentated hardness testing
  • Fully automated hardness profile measurements (determination of case depth, hardness measurements across weld seams) 
  • Stereo microscopy (fractography) 
  • Scanning electron microscopy (fractography, surface appearance, microstructure evaluation)
  • Salt spray corrosion test
  • Failure analysis (determination of failure root causes, improvement and remedial measures)
