Replacement of hard chrome with RUBIG Technology

Many industries, including for example hydraulic cylinder manufacturers, need to take action as the EU has imposed a ban on chrome VI. The RUBIG Group has been working on an appropriate substitute for hard chrome coatings. Joint research activities between RUBIG Competence Center, RUBIG Heat Treatment and RUBIG Industrial Furnaces have come to impressive results regarding tribology and corrosion. Typical requirements for hard chrome coatings can be met or exceeded with DLC Xtended, GasOX or PlasOX processes. These processes have been specially developed for this task.

Customers benefit not only from the increased environmental friendliness, but also from the corresponding process development for heat treatment on a contract basis as well as from complete system solutions on customer’s site.

Duplex Coating – DLC Xtended® (corrosion protection in neutral salt spray test up to 500 hours)

  • PACVD system for coating complex geometries
  • Combination process of plasma nitriding and DLC coating
  • DLC provides excellent properties with respect to
    • Corrosion resistance
    • Wear resistance
    • Cleanability
    • Low adhesion of sand and dirt

Nitriding and post-oxidation processes (corrosion protection in neutral salt spray test up to 120 hours)

  • For nitriding steels (42CrMo4, 31CrMoV9, AISI 4140 or similar)
  • Conversion of the surface into a ceramic layer (Fe-N-Combination) and iron oxide (Fe-O-Combination)
  • Diffusion layer up to 0.6 mm depth with higher hardness and residual compressive stresses
