A team of dedicated researchers from the University of Birmingham teamed up to develop an innovative coating solution (NitroPep) which binds antimicrobial actives on metal and plastic surfaces. But it is only the combination of RUBIG plasma technology that enables resilient, long-term bonding of the layer to the substrate and its effective application.

The key advantage of this coating is that pathogens are destroyed and, subsequently it is also effective against antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. This coating can be used on a wide variety of materials. It is therefore particularly suitable for surfaces that are handled regularly, such as door or grab handles. The treated surface reacts directly with the cell wall of the bacteria or virus and destroys it, preventing further spread. The process is five times more effective than existing technologies using silver or copper. At the University of Birmingham, the efficacy of RUBIG NitroPep against SARS-CoV-2 has been investigated and proven.
